AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION (ACA) LIAISON

In addition to her affiliation with the Association of Camp Nurses, Linda Ebner Erceg works as a full-time camp nurse for the Concordia Language Villages of Bemidji, MN. In a multi-cultural immersion setting, Linda manages and helps deliver health services to over 10,000 villagers and some 1000 staff. Her year-round camp nursing practice expands to 50 sites during the summer. At that time she manages a team of some 40 additional healthcare providers. During the academic year her child-centered practice expands to include adult programs hosted by the Language Villages. The Villages’ year-round programming has enabled Linda to conduct camp nursing research, explore employee health and OSHA applications from a camp perspective, and develop a strong risk reduction initiative for the program.

Linda’s camp nursing activity includes numerous conference presentations, publication, seminar leadership, camp nursing workshops, research, consultations about camp health systems, and focused work in camp health & safety management. Her masters work was specific to camp nursing practice and is supported by additional degrees in health education, psychology, and physical education. Her ongoing research interests include:

A. Injury-Illness Trends of the Camp Community
B. The Impact of International Health Beliefs on U.S. Nursing Interventions
C. Homesickness
D. Management of Camp Health Services

Linda’s accomplishments include authoring The Basics of Camp Nursing (2001) with Myra Pravda, receiving ACN’s Jeanne Otto award (1999), receiving ACA’s Hedley Dimock Award (1998), authoring the Camp Health Service Management Seminar, and serving on various committees for ACA.

This background provided a rich experience base when she changed from ACN’s president to its executive director in 1999. Linda’s passion for camp nursing includes fostering the growth of ACN and establishing the practice as a nursing specialty. Her personal motto, Healthier Camping for All, drives much of her research, reading, and collaboration with others toward that end.
