ACN Who's Who in Camp Nursing

Myra Pravda, RN, MSNLucy Pryor, RN, BA

BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE

Lucy’s first camp healthcare job was in 1979 when her husband became the first fulltime director of the Methodist-owned Camp Rickfish, Parkton, NC. There she set up the healthcare center, wrote protocols and stocked supplies. Later, once her three children were old enough, Lucy took a more clinical role. With her family in 1990 she moved from Rockfish to Camp Hanover, another religiously affiliated camp, near Richmond, VA. At Hanover, Lucy revamped the health services and worked as the primary provider for many years. Currently she serve as coordinator of healthcare services (when blessed with other nurse providers), filling that primary role only when necessary.

Previous to camp life and motherhood, Lucy’s nursing jobs included home health care in eastern Kentucky, medical nursing at Vanderbilt Hospital, boarding school nursing in western North Carolina, and ICU nursing in Galax, VA.

Lucy has been a member of ACN since 1994. ACN has provided support and guidance in her camp work. In 2004, after attending ACN’s spring Symposium, Lucy organized a regional camp nurse symposium that has been an annual event ever since, drawing camp healthcare professionals from surrounding states. This provides a networking opportunity that supports ACN’s mission of “working toward healthier camp communities…” In addition to working with regional camp nurses, Lucy has also led educational events for camp professionals at ACA regional events and the Virginia Ecumenical Camp Leaders Association, where she continued to encourage ACN affiliation.
