PROFESSIONALIZATION COMMITTEE
Myra Pravda has over 20 years of camp nursing experience. Her
masters degree, done at the University of Cincinnati, was in parent
child health. She currently develops programs for Nurses as Teachers,
Inc. One of her most recent creations was "Better Baby Sitters" for
school-aged children. Myra also co-authored and published Off to
Camp, a children's book (513-791-4096 or http://www.offtocamp.com)
which addresses the needs of a first-time camper.
Myra's camp work has been at Camp Livingston, a residential camp
in southern Indiana where she was the Health & Safety Supervisor.
She is also the health manager for the Cincinnati Jewish Community
Center's day camp.
Myra is one of the original ACN members who helped fulfill Jeanne
Otto's dream of bringing ACN forward as a professional nursing
organization. In addition to serving as president and chair of
ACN's board of directors, Myra has written articles about camp
nursing, health and safety for publications such as Pediatric Nursing,
Camping Magazine and ACN's CompassPoint. She has led a number of
workshops at local, regional and national levels, including her
camp nurse workshop called "Healthcare at Summer Camp." Two
topics she particularly enjoys are homesickness and sleep problems.
For the past few summers, Myra has taken students nurses to camp.
Deeply committed to the professional role of camp nursing, Myra
looks forward to the day when every camp nurse is prepared for
their camp role. Her commitment led her to collaborate with Linda
Erceg in writing The Basics of Camp Nursing, a book designed to
address that preparation need. She works to increase awareness
among all nurses about camp practice through her ACN affiliation.
